One thing nobody prepared me for in care is that sometimes, the most important thing you give a person is not physical care, but your time, patience and presence. You can help someone wash, dress, eat and take their medication, but still miss what they truly need if you don't take the time to listen, understand their feelings and make them feel valued. Care has taught me that every person has a story, their own struggles and a need to be treated with dignity and respect. Some days are emotionally challenging, and you may go home thinking about the people you have cared for. You also learn that small things, like a kind word, a smile or simply sitting down to listen, can make a huge difference. My advice to every future carer: Never see care as just a job or a list of tasks to complete. See the person behind the care needs. Treat every service user the way you would want someone you love to be treated, and remember that preserving someone's dignity is just as important as meeting their physical needs.
